What is Chondroitin?
Chondroitin is a molecule chain called mucopolysaccharides. It is classified as a glycosaminoglycan meaning that it is similar to glucosamine and sulfur rich. Its similarity to glucosamine suggests the benefits and uses are likely to be similar.
Chondroitin is found in cartilage. It aids formation and structure and the retention of nutrients and water. Cartilage is not supplied with blood through the vascular system so the presence of chondroitin in cartilage is of major importance. It is also found in the lining of blood vessels.
Chondroitin is a substance made by the body. Diseased joints may show a reduced amount of chondroitin obviating the need for supplementation to assist repair and movement and help alleviate some of the pain.
Some of the claims for chondroitin include a beneficial effect in the prevention of atherosclerosis, kidney stones and high cholesterol but these remain unsubstantiated by published medical tests.
